Why I Wrote This Post
I am an collage artist professionally now, selling my art in my Etsy shop! Whoo whoo!
And to be honest I am having a BLAST finding trends, finding cool images and making collages that make me (and hopefully my customers) smile!
And I do like my handwriting well enough, here is one of my listings that sells with a motivational message that I hand wrote analog style before I started working in Procreate on my iPad…
The problem with this is now that I am making these into different sized wall art prints the words aren't always in the right place and they are not exactly positioned right for all the sizes that I sell.
So what is an artist to do? Use the AMAZING tool, Kittl to add words that look amazing AND are easy to move around wherever you want!
Words Are Hard!
I have been a graphic artist for about 20 years now (WOW that sounds like a long time when I say it out loud) and so I have been placing words into marketing messages for a LONG time!
When I started I took a 6 week course on how to use Adobe Illustrator to manipulate fonts and that stood me in good stead for the next 19 years or so! I LOVE using Fonts in Illustrator!
That said, when I started to look at the ways that the kids were using words in their tshirts and artwork on Etsy, I was like, “that will take me FOREVER to do in Illustrator” with all the arching and bending and what not.
So when a nice man from Kittl asked if I wanted to try their fancy pants system, I was like, sure I'll give it a try… and now I cheat on my first love Illustrator all the time!
Adding Words To Your Artwork
So here is the system I use for adding words to my artwork… I am sure there is a better or easier way, but I am super happy with how cool everything looks and it is already a million times easier than I had it before!
Upload Your Artwork
I make my whole artwork piece and then upload it to Kittl so I can see where I would want to place the art…
As you can see, I left a large open space to the left of the UFO grabbing the cow (never thought that I would say THAT in a blog post, but Cosmic Cowgirl is a trend on Etsy that I can get behind!)
Kittl has ONE MILLION (okay maybe not a million, but a ton of templates already made that you can just use as an example for what would work for you!
I can take the text in the design and use it in a way that would look good in my design for the “Western” theme…
That is okay, but I really wanted it to be fancy so I used their distort feature and made a super amazing font choice that fits in the space exactly! What I generally do is make a ton different words that I can “audition” in my artwork…
And here is the final design that I came up with!
I love how the words add to the design without being the main focus!
Using Kittl To Add Words To Art FAQ
Here are some things that you might be wondering about!
Can you upload your own fonts to Kittl?
Yep! If you have a set of fonts that you use frequently you can upload them into Kittl and then use their cool font tools to manipulate those fonts!
Can you change the font colors in Procreate?
YES! I import the words into my artwork and then you can use the little “pull over the color” trick to add a new color to the words!
Does Kittl give you a commercial license?
Kittl has such a good license for commercial artwork! While you need to check the license for your unique situation, I have found that I can recommend them very highly to my commercial artists!
Kittl To Add Words To Your Art Wrapup
I hope this helps you SOOOOO much! I have been having a blast using Kittl to add words to my art and having options that I just can't do with my own handwriting!
For example, my handwriting that I like is more Times New Roman, serif with an old fashioned vibe that is not great for either Western or Cosmic so using Kittl is so much faster than me having to learn to make my handwriting in a different way!
